Summer is finally here and that means we will be doing lots of fun activities but we will not be having regular meetings of FIRE or small groups.

The following is a list of activities planned for this summer. However this list is subject to change do to weather and other factors. So keep an eye on your mailbox for mailings or keep an eye on this blog to see what is happening.

Parent volunteers are always crucial for successful summertime activities. If you or your parents can help with driving / chaperoning / cooking (if needed) or anything else please email or call Pastor Duncan. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

June Events

June 23rd - 1-2-3 on the 23rd
(The Toy Story Trilogy)
3:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Cost $5 for dinner + Movie Ticket

Join us as the youth portable on Wednesday June 23rd as we watch Toy Story 1 & 2 and then load into the buses to go to Silverdale Regal Cinemas to catch the 7:10 PM showing of Toy Story 3 in 3D. We will have free popcorn at the portable and will have pizza during “intermission” between Toy Story 1 & 2. The cost for pizza will be $5. Either pre-purchase your tickets for the movie or bring $ for your movie ticket.

June 30th - Dungeness Spit
10AM - 4PM
(Rain or Shine)

Dungeness Spit is the longest natural sand spit in the United States extending 5 miles into the Strait of Juan De Fuca. We will spend a day hiking and playing on the spit. The adventurous can do the 10 mile hike to the end of the spit and back, the less adventurous can stay near the bluff and play and hang out. Pack a sack lunch and plenty of water and wear appropriate clothing (no bikinis please). Buses leave at 10AM and will return to NKBC at 4PM.

Love Sick - Home XP (For Parents)

There’s something pretty amazing about being in love, isn’t there? The butterflies in your stomach. The dreamy gazes. No wonder so many of us are so in love with being in love. But if you look around—in the media, at school, in life—we’ve taken what God created and twisted it, morphed it and configured it into something it was never meant to be—an obsession. When romantic relationships become an obsession, balance goes out the window. We miss out on opportunities and experiences we might otherwise have had. And sometimes we even forget who we are. There’s got to be healthier way to do this. There’s got to be another way than being so lovesick.

Week One 5/13/10 - Obsessed
When we become obsessed with relationships, we lose sight of who we are.

There is nothing quite like the experience of falling in love. Nothing. In fact, some people are willing to do just about anything for the feeling of being in love, for the knowledge that someone values them, finds them significant and worthwhile. Some people are even willing to give up who they are as an individual, give up their identity, just for the sake of a relationship. This week we are going to talk to students about the both the fun and wonderful parts of dating and also the danger of sacrificing who they are and who they are designed to be for the sake of romance.

Week Two 5/20/10 - All Your Eggs In One Basket
Dating is a great thing, but it’s not everything.

“Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket!” We’ve all heard the phrase before, some of us have probably even used it a time or two, but when it comes to dating, it can be pretty hard to actually put into practice. We live in a culture where marketing, events and entertainment are driven by romantic relationships, where people are profiled based on relationship status, and where love and romance are a part of our daily conversations. For many students it just seems normal, almost expected to devote all of their time, energy and affection to acquiring or maintaining a dating relationship. This week we’re going to talk to students about finding balance as they learn to fit dating into the many other, equally important, areas of life.

Week Three 5/27/10 - Love Story
You have the power to do great good or harm in your relationships.

High school reunions can be either something we eagerly look forward to, or anxiously dread. The reasons for our excitement or our hesitation are usually the same—the people. We’re concerned about who we will encounter from our past and the lasting impression they had on us—for better or for worse—and the lasting impression we had on them. And no relationship has the ability to leave an impression, for better or worse, than a dating relationship. Dating relationships just have a lot of potential to do great good, or harm in the mark they leave. So this week we are going to help students explore dating from the perspective of the one they date. We want to challenge students this week to think about their own responsibility, regardless of where they may have been in the past, to always consider what they can do in the future to make someone’s story better, and to treat them in a way that will be beneficial and positive in the long run.

EXPERIENCE:

In Chap Clark’s book, Disconnected, he says that parents are responsible for providing the boundaries necessary to help a child grow into the person God has created and redeemed them to be. That’s a pretty heavy task. It requires first that parents know where the child is—an ongoing challenge in itself. And second, it requires that parents know where the dangers lie, where the areas of caution are and what signals indicate that something might be holding the child back.

In this series, we are talking with your child about dating. But more importantly we are talking about balance. In a world where finding a boyfriend or girlfriend sometimes becomes all-consuming, we want to remind students that dating is only one of many areas in their lives. Like everything else, it is good in moderation, when it is not taken to extremes. We also want to help them develop healthy relationships, whether those are dating relationships or friendships with the opposite sex, and help them understand the value in leaving a positive impression in the lives of those we come in contact with.

As a mother or as a father, you are in a better position than anyone to know and understand how dating works in your child’s life. Maybe they haven’t dated anyone, but they are constantly thinking about ways to find that perfect someone. Maybe they haven’t been alone since fourth grade. Maybe they’ve been dating the same person for the past two years. Wherever they fall on the spectrum, you are viewing the situation close-up. Their emotions are in it. You, who have more insight and more life experience, can look down the road for them when they don’t have the perspective to do it on their own. Are there dangers ahead? Is there something that might be holding them back from experiencing the life they were intended for?

I would like to challenge you to take a few minutes this month to reflect on your child’s situation—especially in the area of dating. Think of ways you can be creative and helpful as you set boundaries and help them navigate the wonderful and risky world of relationships.

Eden - Why Everyday Is Earth Day

God created the world and when he was done, He said “It is good”. He created a world full of beauty and wonder. He then created man in His image and gave him the world as a gift to enjoy and care for. It was a precious gift. It was a gift of love.

How are we treating the gift? How are we doing with our first God given “job” of caring for the incredible gift that God gave us. And is it true that how we treat the gift reflects upon how we view the gift giver?

The Home XP - Rhythm

Rhythm:

Have you ever noticed how connected everything is? It’s almost as if there was some type of unseen structure to all of life, a rhythm. Many of us are oblivious to it until things are out of sync. We know something is wrong, and we can maybe pinpoint a few things around us that are culprits, but deep down we know there is something more going on. We out of rhythm—with God, with ourselves or with others.

Week One (March 11th)

The first week of the Rhythm series is designed to help students understand that in the beginning, God established a rhythm. They will unpack the story of creation and the harmony that existed between Adam and God, Adam and nature, and Adam and Eve. They will entertain the idea that from the start, everything worked together in perfect harmony like a beautiful song. But then Adam and Eve made a choice that destroyed the song and threw the rhythm off. They will also look at God’s response to Adam’s sin, and they'll see that God continues to seek relationship with us even after things have fallen apart.

Week Two (March 18th)

This second week, students will be challenged to look at God in new ways. Many times we find that we are so familiar with “churchy” descriptions of God that we forget who He really is. And when we forget who God is, how awesome and surprising He can be, then we are tempted to turn our attention and affection to other things and our lives fall out of tune. In week two students will be challenged to discover a God who is bigger than our attempts to define Him.
(Note: If you are planning to do The XP for the Rhythm series after week 2, this would be a great opportunity to explain and promote the event.)

Week Three (March 25th)

This week students will explore the things that create tension in their own self-perception and learn the ugly truth: Being in rhythm with ourselves and being in rhythm with God go hand in hand. How we view God our Creator affects how we view His creation, ourselves. They will consider the masks they wear and the faults they try to cover up, and they'll receive a challenge to begin to shed those masks and be at peace with who they really are.

Week Four (April 8th)

No person can have a life in rhythm if they are not at peace with the people around them. In the final week of this series students will be challenged to be in rhythm with others, to be passionate about serving those they encounter and to seek forgiveness and reconciliation when needed.

Week Five (April 15th)
The XP!

EXPERIENCE:
In this series we are talking about rhythm and how every piece of our lives is connected. If you went to a band concert and the flutes were out of tune, the last thing you would want is for the tuba section to just play louder in an attempt to try to drown out the squeaky flute players. The same is true in families.

When something is not right in our lives, it affects how we relate to others. If one of you has a bad day, where is that frustration usually displayed? At home, to other family members, right? For some reason, our families tend to get the worst of us, and we save our “game face” for our friends and co-workers. It’s great to have a place where you can be real and a place that’s safe, but sometimes the ways we vent put us out of rhythm with our families.

As a family, help one another find healthier ways to handle those crazy times in life. Realize that the first reaction isn’t necessarily the truest one—how someone is acting may not be the real issue. Those irritating things at home can be symptomatic of something bigger (at least to that person) going on outside the home. The fight over the remote control can be just another situation where you didn’t get something your way that day and it seemed like you were at everyone else’s mercy. The need for order may be due to something in your life that is out of control, like a sick loved one or a stressful office situation.

Help one another work past the exterior angst to the real problems. Once you’ve identified the issue, encourage and pray for one another.

Rhythm - March 11th - April 15th

were in rhythm with each other. We also were in rhythm with ourselves. But the

In following Christ, there is one truth that most of us forget—we were never meant to do this alone. We need other people. It’s critical not just because we need friends, but also because in community we understand more about who God is. We see how He is working in other people’s lives. We learn things that God has taught them, and we get an opportunity to love and serve others. The WE series helps us discover the “WHY” behind community—why we need it, why we should pursue it.

WE: Week One (2/11/10)

We need other people. We get that when we feel lonely, don’t we? But the reality is that there are times when the last thing we want is someone around—whether it’s our own grumpiness or because we just don’t want to be hurt again. But God made us in such a way that people fill a very specific need in our lives. And while God does supply all our needs, He created us to need other people, too.

WE: Week Two (2/18/10)

We talked last week about how we need people, and if we’re honest, we all have realized that at some point or another. But there’s a reluctance to take that next step because it’s risky. It’s scary. And most of all, it’s messy. True community costs us something. But if we don’t have it, it will cost us a lot more.

WE: Week Three (2/25/10)

People’s stories are powerful, aren’t they? There’s something about hearing what’s going on in another person’s life that puts things in perspective for us. We may be thinking that God has forgotten us, that He doesn’t care about what’s going in our world, but then we hear someone share how God showed up when they really needed Him. And because of that, we begin to think that maybe, just maybe, He can be there for us, too. That’s the power of community. It’s how we see God at work in our world. It’s how we grow closer to Him. And it’s an important part of growing in our relationship with Him.

EXPERIENCE:

Over the next three weeks, we are talking to your student about the importance of community. What that means is simply this—we need other people. God never meant for us to go through this life alone. There are times when each one of us knows that very well, and then there are other times when it’s the last thing on our minds. Wherever you are at, you need other people. And they need you. It’s part of how we see God in action in our world. It’s also how we learn more about Him and ourselves.

Recently, I ran across the following article from Carey Nieuwhof, a pastor in Canada. It’s a very candid confession, and one that may reflect your story at some point in your life.

FIND A FRIEND

By default over the years, I have been a pretty private person. I handle most things pretty tightly. I don't have a lot of people who are close to me, but those who are close to me are people I trust implicitly and establish a deep loyalty to.

When I was going through a tough season a few years ago, I went to see some Christian counselors, and their helpful message was simply this—I couldn't go through this alone. Everything inside me said, "Yes, I can," but I realized they were right. I couldn't do it alone.
I remember the night I shared what I was going through with my community group at the time. I'm sure my pride had kept me from talking about it before. Plus, I had earlier been convinced I would just wake up out of this at some point and it would go away. I didn't need to tell anyone. Clearly, that strategy was failing. So I talked to our community group through some tears one night. The love, prayer, empathy and compassion that poured forth was huge. I was humbled and blown away.

Toni, my wife, continues to show an unbelievable kindness. And I have a handful of close friends near and far (some live a long way away), some colleagues and some staffers who tracked with me through this season. I am so grateful for them.

Friendship is still not easy for me. I am really quite private at my core. In this networked world, I know thousands of people by name, but if people get too close, I can still push away. I'm working on that. God's working on that. There has been some big progress on that, I think.
But what I want to say is that I have come to realize that you can't do it alone. We are social beings. We are meant to be together.

I am always surprised that when I sit down with someone to talk through a life situation they are going through, and I ask them "Who else do you talk to this about?", the #1 answer is "No one," That breaks my heart.

If you're going through a hard time, find a friend. Talk to them. Pray with them. For me, it was hard, but life giving, to include a handful of people in a circle. It was life giving to see a group of people in my community group care deeply. We can’t do this alone—and we were never meant to do it that way.

Back in the mid-1990’s I became convinced that the model of youth ministry that churches in America had been pursuing for years was inadequate. The model most prevalent at the time was based upon a model developed in the 1950’s to address a specific need, reaching out to the un-churched. This model was “fun” and brought many teens to attend the youth program and to Christ. However, it was a model that kept teens separated from the larger body of the church. This wasn’t just a church issue though, it was societal, as teens had increasingly become isolated and insulated into narrow peer groupings.

These factors lead me to believe strongly that something had to change. We needed to end the isolation of teens from adults. We needed to integrate and synchronize church and family. But how do you do that? What does it look like. Where do you start?

Recently a group of people, beginning at Andy Stanley’s church with Reggie Joiner and continuing with the Re-Think Group, came up with a new strategy, a model so to speak to address these issues. They call it Orange. It is an integration of church and family.

Orange is not just another program, model or formula. It’s a paradigm shift. It is a brand-new approach to capturing the hearts and imaginations of this generation’s parents and kids. It has been working for over fourteen years.

It is a strategy that maximizes the influence of both the church and parents. It is scripturally based and effective. Orange is a secondary color, created when you combine two primary colors—red and yellow. Orange is what red and yellow can do when they combine efforts. Two colors create a third option. When church and family combine we create something new, something powerful. My goal is to start implementing the Orange strategy as of February 2010. I invite you to join me in this journey as we see the impact of church and family colliding.

What is Orange?

We are all going to give our hearts to something—good or bad—to experience wonder, discovery and passion. Orange is about helping students discover these three principles in the context of their personal relationship with God in a way that demonstrates their own authentic, growing relationship with Him.

Families and church are each working hard to build faith in kids, but imagine the potential results when the two environments synchronize, maximizing their individual efforts. What can the church do to empower the family? How can the family emphasize the work of the church? What would happen if NKBC and families decided they could no longer do business as usual, but instead combined their efforts and began to work off the same page for the sake of the kids.

What Will Change?

We will begin pursuing the following strategy for the NKBC Youth Ministry:
• Engage parents in an integrated strategy
• Synchronize the home and church around a clear message
• Provoke parents and kids to fight for their relationships with each other
• Recruit mentors to become partners with the family
Mobilize the next generation to be the church

The results of pursuing this strategy will necessitate some changes in the way that the youth ministry programs are currently structured. It will also involve the creation of new programs to accomplish the goal of this strategy, an integrated, synchronized effort between parents and church to engage the students in Wonder, Discovery and Passion in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The changes involved will take time to implement completely. I ask for your patience during this time of transition.

Immediate Changes

Youth Group Restructured:

Combined Meeting: F.I.R.E. (Sr. High Youth Group) and Wildside (Middle School Youth Group) will join together into a single meeting, involving corporate worship, communal teaching and small group discussion and interaction. The combined meeting will be on Thursday nights beginning February 11th from 6:30—8:30 PM.

New Format: The format will change. The structure will be formatted around students experiencing three things:

Wonder—I am created to pursue an authentic relationship with my Creator.
Discovery—I belong to Jesus Christ and define who I am by what He says.
Passion—I exist every day to demonstrate God’s love to a broken world.

The XP—Students will be challenged to live out what they are learning in each teaching series an experiential way. The goal is to move from an information-based faith to a relationship with Jesus Christ that is alive and vibrant.

The Home XP-This piece helps a parent and student connect through dialog or shared experiences. The content can either be emailed to parents or will be available on the NKBC Youth blog site. (www.nkbcyouth.blogspot.com)

Small Groups Revised:

Small Groups will move to Wednesday evenings.
We will emphasize the purpose and need for small groups with students.
Curriculum will compliment the large group teaching series.

Then join us as we celebrate our 3rd Annual Progressive Thanksgiving Dinner.

We will meet at the NKBC Youth Portable by 5PM on Sunday November 29th.

We will load up into cars and head out to 4 separate homes. Each home will be offering one of the four courses of our Thanksgiving meal; appetizers, turkey, side dishes (mashed potatoes, etc.) and dessert. We will have time to eat the course at the house we arrive at then it is off to the next house and the next course in the meal.

We will have a fun time as we share a meal in random order, hang out with other teens and just have a good time.

The Lord asked a very important question of Isaiah,
The same question is being asked today, “…who will go for us?”

On Friday October 2nd & 3rd join with hundreds of other teens from around Seattle as we come together for a time of worship, inspiring speakers and making a real difference in the world. We will be staying overnight at Westminster Chapel in Seattle and will be attending Missions Fest Seattle 2009. Saturday we will participating in City Serve, serving others in the community and making a difference in the world.

We will have awesome worship and spectacular speakers and will take part in an outreach on Saturday showing the love of Christ in a practical way and making a difference in the world.

It is easy to lose our focus on what is important. It is easy to lose our focus on what is good for our lives. It is easy to lose our focus on God.

Join us on the weekend of March 20th—22nd as we retreat from all the distractions and refocus our hearts and minds on what truly matters. We will be having a fun time with each other and with God as we worship, play and grow closer together with each other. We will have time (weather permitting for paintball for those that want to play, bring appropriate clothing and extra money if you want to do this.

Tribe - Sunday February 15th

It's time once again to come together with other youth groups to sing, be inspired and have a blast getting to know other Christian teens from other churches.

Who: This is open for all Middle School and Senior High School students. (There will be no Middle School small groups or Sunday Night Alive that night.)

Where: Living Waters Fellowship in Bremerton

When: Sunday February 15th from 6:30 PM - 8:15 PM, buses leave NKBC at 6:00 PM & return by 9:00 PM

Join us as we share God's love in a truly practical way by helping those in need in our community through serving them.

We will be heading out from church at 7:45 AM to several work sites to demonstrate that loving others is an action that we do.

We finish by noon.

This is an incredible experience that I invite you to share in. We have fun together as we work side by side. Often times we learn new skills.

Progressive Thanksgiving Dinner

Sunday November 30th 5PM - 7PM

Join us as we enjoy a Thanksgiving feast together one course at a time.

We will be starting at church and traveling to four different homes. Each home will be serving a separate course of the Thanksgiving meal, appetizers, turkey, side dish (potatoes, stuffing) and dessert. The only catch is that you are not guaranteed to eat the meal in "normal" order. We will then return to church.

If you like to hang out with your friends, have fun doing something a little different and enjoy food then you don't want to miss the Progressive Thanksgiving Dinner.

This event is open to all Sr. High and Middle School youth.

Picture Scavenger Hunt Fall Kickoff Event

After an incredibly busy summer with mission trips, camps, VBS, soccer camp and more mission trips NKBC youth kicked off the school year with a bang as we jumped into cars and headed out on our annual scavenger hunt.

We traveled all over the north end of Kitsap County as we searched out clues, snapped pictures of ourselves in front of various sites, laughed and had fun together.

Yes that is a huge boulder carved like a fish!

Senior High, Take A Hike!

The NKBC Senior High youth group is invited to “Take A Hike!” on Saturday, July 26. We will meet at 10 a.m. at the orange gate (02) on Port Gamble Road NE, just south of SR 104 to Port Gamble. We’ll hike through the Pope Resources Forest to Port Gamble, eat our lunches, and end up at the General Store for ice cream! Parents will meet their teens at the general store at 1 p.m.

Hikers must wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots (absolutely no sandals or flip flops), bring a sack lunch, water bottle, trail mix, and money for ice cream!

Be really prepared: bring sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket in case of rain.

We’d love to have some parents come along too!

Westport Mission Trip

Current 8th through 12th graders are welcome to join us as we serve Twin Harbors Baptist Church in Westport, Washington. The trip will be from Saturday, August 16th through Sunday, August 24th and will cost $150 per person. The focus of the week is to draw new people into the church. The week will consist of leading the church services at THBC both Sundays, participating in outdoor concerts, running a Vacation Bible School program weekday mornings, putting on a Teen Camp weekday afternoons, and hosting Family Fun Nights weekday evenings. If you are interested in coming on the trip, please watch for the flyer in the mail, return the student questionaire, and wait for more information. Feel free to contact Duncan with any questions.

Sr. High Winter Retreat - "Be Still And Know"

Well the Sr. High Winter Retreat was a total blast. The theme for this year was "Be Still And Know That I Am God" from Psalm 46:10. We talked about what it meant in our busy lives to "be still". We discussed how stillness comes from knowing that God is God. Duncan confiscated everyone's cell phones, watches, i-pods and clocks so that no one knew what time it was all weekend.

On Saturday night we got quiet before God doing a "Silent Worship Service" then we moved outside and had an awesome time worshiping around the campfire, singing and praying for one another. We capped the night off with flashlight tag, snacks and then a bedtime story.

We began Sunday morning with a "Sunrise Worship Service" and a time of meditation on scripture and prayer. After that it was Pajama Time as we hung out in our pajama's for the rest of the morning, focusing on slowing down and just being. Taking a Sabbath rest. After lunch we played paintball and did crafts. Then after dinner we ended up worshiping for over 6 hours as God's spirit moved us through Quaker Worship and Affirmations.

Monday morning we slept in, until just before breakfast. Then we cleaned up, packed up. Finally we had a time of worship, Duncan wrapped up with a summary of what was taught and we all shared what we learned and prayed.

It was an incredible weekend and we wish that those that missed it could have been with us.

If You Missed Immersion, You Missed Out

If you missed Immersion last night, Sunday January 27th, then you missed out. The worship was incredible. We all laughed at the music video "Cletus Take The Reel" (sung to the tune of Jesus Take the Wheel". Duncan delivered a challenging Bible message. And we finished with a powerful time of prayer.

However, afterwards we had even more fun dancing and getting wild to the music and crowd surfing off the stage. (I hear that video of this will be appearing on youtube sometime soon.)

The youth will be hosting a Valentine's day dinner and ballroom dancing event on Friday 15th as a way to raise money. We will be serving an elegant meal, in a romantic atmosphere, followed by ballroom style dancing in the fellowship hall. We will also be providing childcare for the parents.

Sunday 11/18 was a great day. Shelby was baptized, declaring publicly her faith in Jesus and confirming her desire to follow Him.

The outpouring of love and support for Shelby was awesome as even the little ones that she works with in the children's ministry came up from downstairs to celebrate her baptism with her.

Welcome to the family Shelby, we are so glad you are our sister!

For those youth who have not been baptized yet, I would ask that you really consider it.

There are many reasons why you should be baptized, not the least of which is that Jesus told us to do it.

Immersion - 11/18/07

Immersion is a gathering of youth ministries--once a month during the school year--designed to lead Christian teens in worship for the express purpose of motivating them to;

--get to know one another (teens from various ministries mixing it up) --so they begin to recognize one another at school, at clubs, on teams, etc --so together they can represent our Lord and Savior in numbers

Arrive around 6:15pm; Immersion kicks off at 6:30pm; we're in school specific prayer groups by 8:00pm; leaving by 8:30pm

Our ultimate hope is simple: Christian teens from multiple Christ-centered, Bible-teaching ministries gathering together at least once a month throughout each school year to become more acquainted, more informed, more inspired, more motivated, and, most importantly, more in love with our Savior, so their part in the Great Commission is made more doable.

Rob Bell - Incredibly Awesome!

So 28 Sr. High youth and 5 adults went to see Rob Bell at the Moore Theatre in Seattle.

What can I say, but that it was incredible.

Rob is even better in person than on video. He is funny, inspirational, thought provoking and captivating. God has really blessed us by gifting Rob with such an ability to grasp truth and teach it to others in an understandable yet profound way.

My attention was held completely for 1 1/2 hours as Rob explained why the God's Aren't Angry and how God through Jesus has achieved peace for all mankind.

Those of you who couldn't make it really missed out. Those of us who went, I pray that the truth of the message would penetrate our hearts and change our lives.

And to the guys and gals who rode in my van. I really had a blast singing with you all until I lost my voice, somewhere around Gig Harbor. :-)

Service First will soon be upon us again. Come join us in bringing heaven to earth by loving and serving the people of our community.

We will be working once again at the Kitsap Housing Authority project on Vetter Road in Poulsbo. Either meet at the church from breakfast from 7:00 - 7:45 or meet at the site at 7:55.

Work starts at 8AM sharp and we will finish by noon.

Wear work clothes and if you have them, bring a hammer, tape measure, pencil, speed square, work belt/pouch, gloves and a good attitude.
